Postgraduate education involves studying for advanced degrees or other qualifications for which a first or Bachelor's degree is required. In the UK, the hierarchy of post-graduate degrees is as follows:
- A Postgraduate Diploma (PG Dip) or a Postgraduate Certificate (PG Cert) is a taught course lasting about 9 months (usually from September to June). There is usually no requirement to produce a written dissertation to obtain a postgraduate diploma: they are considered to be less academic than a Masters degree. These courses are often largely vocational.
- Master's degree
Taught Master's: normally last one year full-time or two years part-time. Teaching usually involves a mixture of lectures, seminars and tutorials. Students must produce a written dissertation at the end of the course (usually an essay of between 10,000 and 20,000 words). The most common qualifications are an MA (Master of Arts), MSc (Master of Science), and LLM (Master of Laws).
Research Master's: a one year full-time or two years part-time course. It involves working to produce an original study known as a thesis (usually an essay of between 30,000 and 40,000 words). Students largely work on their own, but are guided by a supervisor. The qualification is an MRes (Master of Research)
- Doctorate : the highest level of academic study in most countries. It may be a research doctorate (e.g. Doctor of Philosophy, PhD) or a professional doctorate (e.g. Doctor of Medicine, MD). Research doctorates typically involve the submission by the candidate of an original body of research known as a thesis. This may be up to 100,000 words in length, and is reviewed by a small committee of examiners. A PhD may take anything between 3 - 8 years to complete, depending on the subject, candidate and university.
At Elite Education, our team of experienced experts will help applicants without outstanding undergraduate degree experience to maximise their chances of getting places at first class universities by emphasising their complimentary strong points. We are also able to help applicants who have studied one subject at undergraduate level to change to a different subject at postgraduate level (e.g. science to business).
For doctorate students, we offer assistance with scholarship applications to help reduce their financial burden.
